So far I have really enjoyed this book. It has a different perspective on racism and opression and it is portrayed in a way that is different than most books. One part that interested me was the way Bigger's personality and view on the world changed after he murdered Mary. He began to realize that white people viewed him as a potential threat, but one that would never be as severe as a murderer. He becomes fascinated with the idea that he can just act like other people wanted to see him act, but then still do whatever he wanted. He begins to feel powerful after killing Mary, instead of remorseful, which shows the type of character Bigger truely is.
I was left really surprised by the end of this book. Throughout the novel, Bigger was obviously guilty of the crimes but the writing made you want to feel bad for him and sympathize with his problems. Then, at the end of the book Bigger says that something inside of him made him kill, and that something must be good. After reading that I felt like I lost all sympathy for him and realized that even after everything, he still didnt realize he was the one who did something horrible.
