Point Of View

When I read Things Fall Apart I realized that their were many similarities to the Poisonwood Bible. Except the fact that the point of view was switched from African tribe to American missionaries. This lead me wonder why Chinua Achebe used third-person omniscient and if he just used a point of view of Okonkwo how it would have effected the novel?

Well, if the point of view was switched to first person, then the reader would have had to wait until Obierika showed up in the exile to learn of the white man's religion taking over Umuofia. Also, there would be no public reaction towards how Okonkwo treated his family, because no one would have told it to his face because he was a powerful man. There would have been a lot of information and depth missing from the story, and the book would also have moved slower.

I knew this novel reminded me of something, I just couldn't think of it! It has so many similarities to the Poisonwood Bible! If the point of view were changed, the reader's view of Okonkwo would be much different simply because they would be able to see the reasoning behind Okonkow's acts. The reader would be able to sympathize with his actions and see what fueled them.
