Onkonkwo's Mistreatment of Family

I feel that Onkonkwo mistreated his wives and children. He had a lot of anger built up that he took out on people that didn’t deserve it. He was perpetually angry at his father and often overreacted with rage when a family member did something he didn’t like. Even in the clan, some people were shocked to hear that he almost killed Ekwefi with a gun. Although that the customs and culture in Umuofia didn’t have as strict of views on treatment of women and children as society nowadays, I still believe that Onkonkwo overstepped the boundaries a few times.

I think that Onkonkwo is almost a little misunderstood. I definitely agree with you though Kate, Onkonkwo really did treat his family horribly. But he just has all this misplaced rage, and the only way I think he could deal with it was taking it out on the people he loved. On the outside Onkonkwo is a tough guy with a thick skin, but on the inside he is searching for a way to deal with all his anger.

I agree Sami his misunderstood and you also have to realize that the customs of his village make him the " man of the house" so by the customs his ways may not be completely what the village excepts but they allow it because he has proven himself to be a better man in many other ways to the village.

I think you're both right. Onkonkwo is certainly not a terrible person. If his father hadn't been so lazy, I believe he would have turned out differently. But I think that to make up for the motivation his father lacked and the impression he left behind, Onkonwo believed he had to prove his masculinity to members of the clan and did so by exerting his physical strength and dominance over his friends and family.

I agree with you both! I think Onkonwo's perception and relationship with his father no doubt influenced the person he was as an adult. Well put when you said "Onkonwo had to prove his masculinity", because he was definitely doing just that, with his violent behavior and "prestigious village titles".
