I have already seen two references made in this book, both in chapter 3. The first one is about when Lockwood is thinking back about the sermon about "Seventy Times Seven," which is actually Matthew 18 talking about forgiveness. Does this allusion foreshadow Lockwood having to forgive someone? The other referance made in chapter 3 is from Shakespeare, when he mentions King Lear.
reading This book reminded me a lot of the story of Estella And havisham in one of our previous novels. Withering heights was difficult to read at first because of the style it was written in. Anyone else have any trouble reading and understanding the chapters?
I so do not like reading this book. I don't like the style at all. I can't understand what is happening. And the beginning is so slow. But so far i don't even understand the point of this book. Hopefully it gets better and less slow. It's almost like Grapes of Wrath slow! It does have a style similar to the book with Miss Havisham though. Good connection Reena!
It does start off rather slow. I hope it picks up for you! I am also curious to see what you end up thinking of Heathcliff as you get further in the novel.
I agree with Reena and Brittany, I am not a fan of this book so far. The way that it is worded makes it challenging to follow at times and hard to figure out what is going on. But, one prediction that have is that somebody is going to be shot. At the end of chapter 8, it talks about how Hindley likes to play with his gun in drunken rages. Nothing about that statement sounds promising to me, so I believe that this is foreshadowing.
First off, I don't know about you all, but I am still finding this book slightly challenging to follow. Second, what are your thoughts on Catherine and how she gets so excited to see Heathcliff as if there are feelings there? Do you think that Edgar, who is clearly jealous, is going to do anything about it?
Hello groupies! I thought it was kind of weird how excited she got when she saw Heathcliff. And Edgar definatly got jealous and thats why he wanted to basically fight Heathcliff but then got to scarred to do it himself. I also think Edgar's anger towards Isabella comes from his jealousy towards Heathcliff. This part is kind of confusing because it is hard to understand everyone's motives behind their actions since there all intertwined.
She so likes Heathcliff!!!!!!!! I am still having trouble following who is who and how they relate. I can't seem to pick up on the connections. I agree with Alex though i think someone is going to wind up dying. As i read farther on in this book i am starting to get more into it. I think it will turn out to be a good ending... or at least a good climax. Cannot wait until out next lit circle. When is that by the way?
I think that this section of the book really foreshadowed that the climax is going to be about Heathcliff and Catherine's love. Brittney, the next one is Friday because you missed Thursday's.
I can make a connection for this week's reading! In Twilight, several direct quotes are used to describe Edward and Jacob as Heathcliff and Edgar. I noticed this when I was watching the movie earlier today.
You are such a nerd Mackenzie! But i can totally see that. It's like Linton is Edward and Heathcliff is Jacob. This is getting sad though i totally wanted Cathy to be with Heathcliff i can't believe she died. If i was super sensitive and cried over books in movies i would have been sobbing! I'm still waiting to see how it connects to present day. And where Heathcliff is now. I thought this book was supposed to be a happy love story!
Mackenzie, I know what your talking about! What an awesome connection. While I was reading, I found it kind of weird how Hindley's character is so dramatically different and just how much Catherine impacted his personality. Anyone else realize how much the character's personalities dramatically change throughout the novel...first Catherine then Heathcliff and now Hindley! Any thoughts?
It seems we really like to relate this book to Twilight. Haha. Like I said on Friday, I also found a connection in Twilight. When Catherine dies, Heathcliff begs her to haunt him and not leave him alone in the world. This reminded me of when Bella does dangerous things to hear Edward's voice in her head so she doesn't feel so alone.
This book ended so weird. Not what i predicted would happen. And cousins marrying! That's weird... This was kind of a depressing book. Heathcliff is such a bad guy on the outside but it seems i had a growing sympathy for him as i continued reading this book. And all this moving between the two properties is weird, why can't they just pick one place and be happy and normal. There was never really an intense moment in this book, it was somewhat dull but i do like the story line. I also really liked how history kind of repeats itself. Catherine was to embarrassed to be with Heathcliff because he wasn't of the same social status although she loved him. It's the same situation with little Cathy and Hareton but Cathy didn't make the same mistake. In a way it was like a second chance to fix the past mistake. I am definitely not looking forward to writing the essay on this though...

Brittany I agree! Cousins marrying is gross. I guess that was considered normal at that time? Haha. I never really got into this book; I found it quite boring. It was also confusing to me, even at the end of the book. What did you all think?
I also agree with your comment Britt! I was kind of thinking the two places, Wuthering Heights and the Grange represent to opposing forces but I couldnt quite figure out what they were since the book was so confusing with everyone having the same name! But yeah there was really no climax in the book, it was just a progression of the character's lives. The cousins thing is weird in our time period but maybe that was expected in that time period.
